Why Snow?
Why Snow?
A number of years ago Bill Cosby did a comedy routine called, “Why is there Air?” It was not a scientific look at the need for air but a silly reminder that we need air to blow up volleyballs and stuff. I was thinking this morning, why did God create snow? I know that we need rain to replenish the earth, water the vegetation, and give us drinking water. But there are places that never see snow and they seem to do all right. So why did God create snow? I will admit that snow can be kind of pretty but then you have to shovel it. Snow on the roads is pretty inconvenient and it loses it’s beauty pretty quickly as it mixes with dirt and salt. People slip and fall in the snow. Today, I was not paying attention and so I rolled my car window down (is that the correct term now with power windows?) and my whole side was covered in snow. I also stepped in a mini snow drift and got snow down my shoe. I love wet socks all day. Snow is also cold. So I ask again, why did God create snow?
I can hear some of your answers now. Variety. Snow ball fights. Sledding. Skiing. Beauty. Snow angels. The joy of seeing a small dog hop through the drifts. To help cleanse the air and earth. But I guess, for me, the answer is more simple. He created snow because he could. It is another demonstration of his glory, power, and creativity. Snow flakes falling are a reminder that God created a diverse and beautiful place for us to live. He could have created everything gray. Or he could have created only one kind of flower. Or one kind of tree. He could have made us all look alike. But he chose to give us four different seasons. He gave us colors that we can never recreate. He gives us beautiful plants and trees and then he takes them away so that we can be amazed at the their beauty every Spring. He even made the death of the leaves a beautiful picture of his glory. While I am not a huge fan of snow, he creates snow in such a beautiful way that each flake seems to be different. And while I know that I am scientifically ignorant, it touches my soul to think that God created snow just so we could play in it. Just so we could be amazed by it.
The heavens declare the glory of God. Snow is a gift that shouts the glory and beauty of God. And yes, it is an inconvenience at times, and yes, it is cold, but it is also a gift that we can and should go out into and allow the beauty of God to envelope us. Sometimes he gives us a small dusting of his beauty and other times he overwhelms us in his glory. Enjoy his gift. He didn’t have to give it to us.
